DUBAI: People around the world have been protesting in major cities demanding justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and the other black Americans who have been victims of police brutality.
The streets of New York, Los Angeles, London, Toronto, Paris and more have witnessed, over the past few days, celebrities and influencers stand together in solidarity with the black community.
Meanwhile, other stars have taken to their social media platforms to demand justice and draw attention to various organizations which help low-income protesters pay bail or donation pages that directly benefit the family members of the victims.
American-Iraqi entrepreneur Huda Kattan has taken to Instagram this week to announce that her cosmetics brand, Huda Beauty, will donate $500,000 to the NAACP Legal Defence Fund, a civil and human rights organization that provides legal assistance to low-income African Americans.
“At Huda Beauty we stand against racism today and always. In solidarity with the black community and the Black Lives Matter movement, we are pausing our regular content,” she wrote to her 44.3 million followers.
“Now is a time to listen, learn and reflect. We are joining in the fight against systemic racism, and we encourage those who aren’t familiar with the Black Lives Matter movement to educate themselves and take action,” the Dubai-based beauty mogul wrote before quoting American political activist Angela Davis: “In a racist society it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist.”
Kattan established her beauty brand in 2013 with her sisters, Mona and Alia Kattan, and her husband Christopher Goncalo. Earlier this year, the 36-year-old makeup artist launched a skincare brand, Wishful Skin, that has so far released three “life-changing” products.
To celebrate black voices, she promised that her team will be posting a “black out” across her brands’ channels. “We stand for equality and while today we are making our voice heard in support of Black Lives Matter, we will continue to support all communities facing global injustices,” her post read.
Kattan is not the only celebrity to donate a hefty sum amid the George Floyd protests sweeping the US.
Earlier this week, Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively shared a joint statement on Instagram, revealing that they will donate $200,000 to the NAACP Legal Defence Fund.
