Christian Arabs across the Levant celebrate the festive season with these seasonal songs. Some are head-bopping, some are lilting melodies and they are all heard in cafes, shops and homes throughout December.
‘Jayi El-Layli Yasou3’
This festive tune is performed by Julia Boutrus, who is of Palestinian-Armenian descent. The song was composed by her brother, Ziad.
‘Ras El-Eid’
The classic number “Jingle Bells” — which is a popular English-language ditty — has been translated into several Arabic versions, including this catchy one by Salwa Al-Katrib.
‘Sahrit Eid’
The song, which translates to “happy holidays,” is from Lebanese soprano Majida El-Roumi’s full-length studio album, “Nour Men Nour,” which features 12 festive carols, including “Bethlehem” and “Nachid El-Hobb.”
‘Sawt El-Eid’
This one follows the globally recognized tune of “Silent Night” and one of its most popular versions is sung by Fairouz. The song is a lilting lullaby, much like its English counterpart.
‘Hallelujah’
Performed by Lebanese soprano coloratura singer Hiba Tawaji, this one is a peaceful melody with lyrics written by father Youssef Mouannes.
‘Ahla Bi Yassouh’
Carole Samaha’s “Ahla Bi Yassouh” describes a beautifully lit market, which has been decorated with colorful lights for the festive season.
