LOS ANGELES: The year of must-see TV continues with the release of HBO’s latest miniseries, “The Undoing,” available in the Middle East on OSN.

The six-episode drama follows Grace Fraser, played by a captivating Nicole Kidman, who is a successful therapist and author whose life begins to unravel after a mother at her son’s prestigious school is murdered and Grace’s husband goes missing, revealing a web of lies, violence and intrigue.

Based on the 2014 novel “You Should Have Known” by Jean Hanff Korelitz, the series was written and produced by David E. Kelley and directed by Susanne Bier of “Bird Box” and “The Night Manager” fame. Hugh Grant stars alongside Kidman, meaning there is no shortage of star wattage in the gripping show.

“This is escapism. It’s fun. It’s thrilling,” Kidman told Arab News. “It’s like you can sit down and watch it with your friends, your partner, whoever you want to watch it with and go on a really crazy ride.”

It is a murder mystery set in the arena of the ultrarich and successful, where beautiful backdrops — think marble-gilded brownstones and treasure-laced museum halls — play host to flawed characters and a twisting, dark storyline.

The drama is set against the backdrop of New York in the springtime, which, while a beautiful contrast to the characters’ tumultuous inner lives, serves as a reminder that the series was originally intended to release in May and was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I remember saying, ‘Is this going to be safe? Should we do it?’” Kidman shared. “Everyone was like ‘no, no it’ll be alright. Little did we know. But timing is timing, so we couldn’t push it through. We didn’t have a way to finish the show. We had to finish the last episode. we couldn’t do it (in time).”

Peppered with paternity tests, treason, police detectives, cunning lawyers and sociopaths, the show has received fairly positive reviews with media outlets around the world lauding its stellar performances.

Grant, who plays Jonathan Fraser, the witty pediatric oncologist husband of lead character Grace, scores particularly well in reviews, with The Guardian stating, “come for Nicole Kidman, in the hope that this new HBO miniseries will fill the ‘Big Little Lies’ shaped hole in your weekly viewing schedule, but stay for Hugh Grant.”
