Gerard Butler talks family and high-octane action films

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood’s latest disaster movie offering, “Greenland,” sees humanity threatened by a comet on a collision course with Earth — Arab News sat down with stars Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin to find out more about the high-octane film.

While many disaster movies focus on experts in big-picture attempts to stop the disaster, “Greenland” keeps the stakes personal by following the Garrity family as they journey to find shelter before it’s too late.

“This story is so relatable because this guy, he’s not a Secret Service agent. He’s not a superhero,” Butler said of his character, John Garrity. “He’s just a dad and he’s not even a perfect dad.”

As meteorites decimate cities and people give in to panic, the estranged Garrity family grows closer, mirroring Butler’s real-life relationships with his parents, who despite having not seen him in months due to COVID-19 restrictions, are still just as doting as ever.

“It’s very sweet that they still care and you’re still their little boy,” Butler said, adding that he mined his relationship with his parents for insight on how to play a caring father. “That definitely helped me in the role, to play that father who will do anything in these trying times to try and protect his family in the midst of this craziness.”

The film was directed by Ric Roman Waugh. Supplied

And while their characters were growing closer, the actors formed a tight knit group as well. Co-star Morena Baccarin told Arab News that she coached and comforted the actor playing the family’s young son — Roger Dale Flloyd — and that she and Butler became good friends on set.

“There are days where you’re just so tired and you’re not in the mood or you don’t want to put yourself through the ringer emotionally,” Baccarin — who plays estranged wife Allison Garrity — said, adding “we just could check in with each other and be there for each other and that was really nice.”

Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, the film has faced repeated delays in the US, but has already hit the big screens in some international markets — including Saudi Arabia and the UAE — where COVID-19 regulations have been amended.

‘Moonlight’ director Barry Jenkins to helm Disney’s new ‘Lion King’ film

Author:
Wed, 2020-09-30 10:02

LOS ANGELES: Disney’s blockbuster remake of “The Lion King” is getting a follow-up from Oscar-winning “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins, the company told AFP Tuesday.

The 2019 movie featuring photo-realistic graphics and a star-studded voice cast including Beyonce took over $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office, despite mixed reviews.

The film about young lion cub Simba avenging his father’s death became the highest-grossing of the Mouse House’s many recent remakes, more than justifying its estimated $250 million budget.

The follow-up is expected to use the same approach, though no start date for production, plot or cast has yet been announced.

Jenkins, whose 2016 coming-of-age drama “Moonlight” won the Academy Award for best picture, said in a statement that he “grew up with these characters” after helping his sister raise two young boys in the 1990s.

Author:
Wed, 2020-09-30 21:00

LOS ANGELES: A sequel to the comedy “Borat” has been purchased by Amazon Prime and is expected to hit the streaming platform before November’s US election, a source familiar with the deal told AFP Tuesday.

The movie will see British comedian and actor Sacha Baron Cohen reprise his cult favorite role as a bumbling and politically incorrect reporter from Kazakhstan, after nearly 15 years.

The 2006 original, “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,” grossed more than $260 million, winning over critics and spawning endless catchphrases among devoted fans. It even earned an Oscar screenplay nomination.

According to Deadline, the follow-up movie was shot covertly with minimal crew as soon as coronavirus restrictions eased this summer in the US and overseas.

Nora Attal, Nour Rizk light up Dior runway

Author:
Wed, 2020-09-30 11:52

DUBAI: Designer Maria Grazia Chiuri presented the Dior Spring 2021 ready-to-wear show to a socially distanced audience in a tent in the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris on Tuesday night. The offering featured 86 looks modeled by a diverse cast of catwalkers, which included two familiar regional faces: Moroccan-British star Nora Attal and Lebanese model Nour Rizk.

Rizk, who is based between London and Dubai, took to the runway wearing a zip-up windbreaker in Shibori-inspired tie dye paired with a matching skirt and a headwrap.

For Attal’s part, the 21-year-old turned heads wearing a sheer, white lace playsuit with long-sleeves and fringe detailing.

Attal, who made her runway debut in 2017, is a runway fixture at the house of Dior. She has walked in plenty of shows for the Parisian maison, including the Spring 2019 couture, Spring 2018 ready-to-wear and Fall 2018 couture shows, among others.

Meanwhile, it was Rizk’s first time walking for the French house.

However, she has had quite a stellar Fashion Month this season, gracing the runways of David Koma, No.21, Max Mara, Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini and Burberry.

According to show notes, women at home served as a point of inspiration for the Dior collection, be they poets or intellectuals, “wrapped in infinite layers of color, like Virginia Woolf, or dressed in a simple white shirt, like Susan Sontag.”

Chiuri’s new collection was punctuated by chiffon dresses, tunics, short kimonos, bar jackets, culottes and embroidered skirts in dusty colors and tie-dye. The former Valentino creative director also worked with women in Indonesia on original Ikat prints, which were translated onto duster coats.

The show, which was streamed on social media platform TikTok was presented to a front row that included “Game of Thrones” star Maisie Williams and her partner Reuben Selby, Russian supermodel Natalia Vodanova and French actress Ludivine Sagnier.

The runway presentation was not without a rather shocking surprise – as the last model finished the finale train, a woman in the audience walked onto the catwalk and unfurled a yellow banner bearing the slogan “We Are All Fashion Victims” and the logo of London climate protest group Extinction Rebellion.

DUBAI: Actors, models and socialites brought their fashion A-game to this year’s Monte Carlo Gala for Planetary Health in Monaco this week.

Hosted by the Monégasque Royal Family, Prince Albert II and his glamorous wife, Princess Charlene, the event brought together a host of A-listers on the terraces of the Opera Monaco to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems for the future of humanity.

Among the guests in attendance was British actress and model Kate Beckinsale, who turned heads wearing a gown from Beirut-based designer Georges Chakra. The white gown, which was plucked from the designer’s Fall 2019 couture collection, featured a one-shoulder cut with an asymmetric cape, as well as dazzling gold embellishment.

When it came to her hair, Beckinsale opted to pull it back into a voluminous updo letting loose a few face-framing strands. As for her makeup, the 47-year-old kept it simple, going for a sun-kissed complexion, a golden smokey eye and pink lipstick.

The mother-of-one accessorized her show-stopping look with a pair of dazzling diamond earrings by Anabela Chan.

As one of the first major international red carpet events to take place after the coronavirus was declared a global pandemic in early spring, guests had to be extra cautious. Attendees all arrived at the socially-distanced event wearing facemasks.

However, for Beckinsale, her choice of facemask wasn’t just about safety, hygiene and comfort, but an extension of her glamorous outfit. The “Underworld: Evolution” star had the Lebanese couturier custom-make a face mask out of the same material as her red carpet dress. The cloth mask even featured the same gold sequin detailing as the dress.

Other guests at the gala included British singer Sting, who was the evening’s honoree, joining previous recipients Leonardo DiCaprio, Orlando Bloom and Robert Redford.

Former “X Factor” winner Leona Lewis took to the stage to perform. AFP

Hollywood stars Helen Mirren, Sienna Miller, Johnny Depp and Rebel Wilson, model Alton Mason and designer Tommy Hilfiger were also at the event in Monaco. Meanwhile, former “X Factor” winner Leona Lewis took to the stage to perform.

Funds raised to-date support marine conservation programs, the expansion of protected areas and efforts to combat ocean acidification and plastic pollution.

Experimental artist Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim to represent UAE at 2022 Venice Biennale

Tue, 2020-09-29 09:02

DUBAI: Based in the seaport town of Khor Fakkan, in the exclave of the emirate of Sharjah, Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim is one of the UAE’s earliest experimental artists. His handcrafted, colorful and whimsical installations and sculptural works respond to his natural surroundings, particularly to the desert and sea landscapes of his homeland.

“My connection with the natural landscapes of the UAE has inspired my work since I was a teenager,” said the artist to Arab News. “In exhibiting at the Venice Biennale, I feel I will be sharing an aspect of my home and culture with many other nations and starting a dialogue with other exhibitions presenting aspects of their own homes and cultures. For an artist, this is an exciting and creatively enriching opportunity to engage with some of the world’s most intriguing artists and concepts.”

Ibrahim was an influential member of the UAE’s avant-garde art community that formed during the early 1980s. His work has been acquired by major public and private institutions throughout the world, including the British Museum, Centre Pompidou, the Sharjah Art Foundation, Art Jameel and the Barjeel Art Foundation. His work was included in the Kochi-Muziris Biennial 2016 and most recently, at Desert X AlUla. Currently on view is Ibrahim’s solo exhibition Memory Drum, at the Lawrie Shabibi art gallery in Alserkal Avenue, Dubai.

Ibrahim’s work will be featured in a solo exhibition at the National Pavilion UAE for the 2022 edition of La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Maya Allison of the New York University Abu Dhabi Art Gallery.

“Mohamed’s work is singular and immediately recognizable, yet constantly developing,” said Allison to Arab News. “He draws directly on his environment and reflects the changing world around him, with a deep trust in his own particular process. Venice will mark our fifth collaboration, yet his work continues to surprise me, even as it retains a distinct visual style, demonstrating a profoundly developed artistic voice.”

The mission of the National Pavilion UAE has long been to curate and provide a platform for the untold stories of the UAE.

“With that in mind, we have made a conscious decision to move toward a more artist-led approach to exhibition development, using our global platform to highlight the UAE’s incredible community of well-established artists whose work deserves international recognition,” said Layla Binbrek, coordinating director of the National Pavilion UAE.

“Following the success of our 2019 solo exhibition by Nujoom Alghanem, Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim’s remarkable form-led practice and organic, handcrafted works — which are physically and conceptually deeply rooted in the unique natural landscape of his home in Khor Fakkan — made him a very fitting choice for our next pavilion,” she added.

Ibrahim’s prolific body of work captures the UAE’s multifaceted community and natural environment through an organic and endearing approach to abstraction. His figures retain an emotional and life-like sensibility that all can relate to.

“Mohamed’s practice, extending back to the 1980s, is extraordinarily rich and varied,” explained William Lawrie, co-founder of Lawrie Shabibi. “He’s one of those rare artists who creates truly automatically and from his subconscious.”

UK to return looted Sumerian artifact to Iraq

Author:
Mon, 2020-09-28 21:40

LONDON: An ancient artifact that may have been looted before being smuggled to the UK is set to return to Iraq.

The item is a Sumerian temple plaque featuring the seated figure of a high priest or ruler, carved from limestone and dating from around 2400 BC.

It will be sent to Iraq, where it is thought to have originated, after it was spotted for sale and seized by police in 2019 following a tip off by experts at the British Museum in London.

The plaque will be put on display to the public for the next two months at the museum before its repatriation.

Prior to its discovery, no record of the plaque was found in any official record or museum inventory, lending credence to the theory that it may have been looted.

It bears physical resemblances to other Sumerian artifacts discovered at Girsu, one of the world’s oldest known settlements, at modern-day Tello in southern Iraq.

Girsu, originally excavated by French archaeologists from the late 19th century, has also been the focus of researchers from the British Museum in recent years. Even now, only a small part of the site has been successfully excavated.

The trade in stolen and smuggled items of huge value from the Middle East is lucrative, and a constant source of dialogue between the British Museum and international police forces hunting stolen goods.

“We’re used to coming across tablets, pots, metalwork, seals and figurines on the art market or in seizures that have been trafficked. But it’s really exceptional to see something of this quality,” said Dr. St. John Simpson, the museum’s senior curator.

“There are only about 50 examples of these known from ancient Mesopotamia. So that immediately places it on the high-rarity scale,” he added.

“We can be fairly sure that this object comes from the Sumerian heartland. That is the area that got very badly looted between the 1990s and 2003.”

Christopher Wren of TimeLine Auctions, where the plaque was spotted for sale by Simpson’s colleague Sebastien Rey, admitted that it was possible that it had been looted from Iraq.

“The vendor, who had casually and innocently acquired it from a German arts fair some years ago, was horrified to hear this and immediately volunteered to renounce any claim to ownership and expressed the wish that it be returned to its place of origin,” Wren said.

“The piece is not documented as having been looted and is not listed on any database, so it did not show on the checks undertaken by us.”

Mohammad Jaafar Al-Sadr, Iraq’s ambassador to the UK, said: “We extend our gratitude to the British Museum staff for their efforts and cooperation with us.”

‘Joker’ actor Joaquin Phoenix names newborn River in sweet tribute

Author:
Mon, 2020-09-28 12:39

DUBAI: Actors Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara have welcomed their first child together, a baby boy named River. The name is a sweet homage to River Phoenix, Joaquin’s older brother, who passed away aged 23 in 1993.

Director Victor Kossakovsky revealed the exciting news at the 2020 Zurich film festival after a screening of the black-and-white documentary “Gunda.” Phoenix, who won an Oscar for his role in “Joker,” was an executive producer on the film.

Asking about Phoenix’s involvement in the film, Kossakovsky said: “He just got a baby by the way … A beautiful son called River.”

Many fans shared emotional reactions on social media after reports first emerged that the couple had named their first son River, as an apparent homage to Joaquin’s late brother.

“The fact that Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara have called their newborn son River has me all sorts of emotional. So beautiful. Congratulations to them both,” one wrote, while another said they were “crying so much.”

Phoenix, 45, and Rooney, 35, have not officially announced the birth of their first-born, but they also never confirmed their pregnancy.

The reclusive couple got engaged in May last year.

The new parents met on the set of “Her” in 2013 and have since gone on to star in several films together, including 2018’s “Mary Magdalene.”

Bella Hadid donates designer clothing for a good cause

Author:
Mon, 2020-09-28 13:28

DUBAI: If you’ve ever wanted to get your hands on Bella Hadid’s ultra-luxe wardrobe featuring brands like Dior, Off-White and Vivienne Westwood, you may just have a chance. The part-Palestinian model this week decided to take part in the Sidewalk Sale for Social Justice in Brooklyn by donating a slew of her own clothing items to the sale, and it’s all for a good cause.

The Sidewalk Sale for Social Justice, which took place on Sunday, benefits a variety of causes such as the Black Lives Matter movement, which Hadid has been quite outspoken in her support of.

The Palestinian-Dutch model documented the charitable event via her Instagram Stories, and showcased the “lil rack of stuff” she had for sale, which included plenty of designer items.

“I’ve got a lil rack of stuff!! curated by my sis @haleywollens ! But also so many great vendors !!! 100% of proceeds going to @abundantbeginnings @brooklyn_supported_agriculture! Thank you @sorrymydude for this (sic),” she wrote alongside a photo of herself laying among the donated pieces of clothing.

The Sidewalk Sale for Social Justice coordinators were thrilled with Hadid’s charitable contributions, and reposted her donated items on their Instagram Stories.

“This week we have donations from the best dressed baby doll @bellahadid,” said one of the posts.

It’s not the first time the model cleans out her closet for a humanitarian cause. In June, the 23-year-old donated a pair of paint-splattered Miu Miu boots for British Vogue’s online auction in aid of organizations  NHS Charities Together and the NAACP.

Nour Arida, Jessica Kahawaty star in Boucheron campaign

Author:
Mon, 2020-09-28 11:29

DUBAI: It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Lebanese fashion blogger Nour Arida and Lebanese-Australian model Jessica Kahawaty, both of whom were tapped to star in high jewelry label Maison Boucheron’s new Legacies campaign.

Arida stars in the campaign alongside her four-year-old daughter Ayla.

“@boucheron brought us together for a powerful message: Legacies, that we pass on from a generation to another,” Arida posted on Instagram, alongside sweet snaps of the mother-daughter duo.

A seasoned model and media personality, Kahawaty has appeared in her fair share of ads and campaigns, however, it marks the first time she has teamed up with Maison Boucheron.

“Happy to introduce to you my campaign ‘Legacies’ By @Boucheron side by side with my mama,” she wrote on Instagram, alongside a series of images of the advert which also features her mother, Rita Kahawaty. “Spot us in Boucheron stores soon,” she added.

In the campaign photos, shot by London-based fashion photographer Zuzanna Blur, the mother-and-daughter duo can be seen posing alone and together on a sofa wearing high-octane jewels from the renowned French jewelry label.

Toronto-based travel and fashion influencer Saira and her mother also appear in the new campaign for one of France’s oldest jewelry houses.

They join other international stars who have lent their faces to the high jewelry maison, such as US actress Kate Winslet, French model Laetitia Casta and Chinese actress Zhou Dongyu.

Beirut, you broke our hearts.... goodbye بيروت كسرتي قلبنا...

A post shared by Nour Arida (@nouraridaofficial) on

While Arida recently made headlines for her move to Paris after the Aug. 4 explosion in Beirut — a difficult decision, according to the star, who posted “Beirut, you broke our hearts” on Instagram at the time — Kahawaty has also had a busy few weeks.

The Boucheron campaign announcement comes just a few days after the Dubai-based model and activist revealed her latest venture, a food delivery concept, titled Mama Rita.

The new service is a food delivery venture that focuses on healthy, home-cooked meals that her mother specializes in.

Our story: @mamarita started as an idea 2 years ago. For years, family, friends and everyone who tried my mother’s food told her that she should share it with the world. We started thinking of a cookbook last year but it wasn’t the same. How can people smell, taste and experience her cooking to the fullest? I’ve always been a major foodie, I love to take control ordering food at a table or hosting dinner parties, and I have a great palette. One problem: I don’t know how to cook. We wanted to reach people far and wide who were just like me or simply didn’t have time to cook home food. The mamas, the busy bees, the students, those at their office desk, at-home gatherings... and more! Most importantly, I wanted the food to be affordable and the pricing democratic. Food is for everyone. This is a passion project to feed people healthy, homey and delicious food. We are starting in Dubai but it won’t stop here. My aim is to touch foodies worldwide and reach the four corners of the world with what I simply call - Good Food.

For Jessica’s part, she handles the logistics of the company, focusing on branding, content, photography, procuring, copywriting and website design.

As if that wasn’t enough, Kahawaty turned 32 this month. The UNICEF ambassador celebrated her special day with a disco-themed birthday dinner alongside her loved ones in Dubai.

India’s croon jewel: Lata Mangeshkar on turning 91 and acing the Twitter game

Sun, 2020-09-27 21:41

PATNA, India: On Monday, as Lata Mangeshkar turns 91, India’s most accomplished and acclaimed playback singer says she will “continue to sing until her last breath.”

“Even today, I feel like a student of music. I have so much to learn when I compare myself to the great musicians of our country. I will sing until my last breath. There is no retirement for an artist,” Mangeshkar said during an exclusive interview with Arab News.

Born in 1929 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Mangeshkar moved to Mumbai, Maharashtra with her family and four siblings — Meena Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar and Hridaynath Mangeshkar — in 1945.

After recording her first Hindi song for a film titled Aap Ki Seva Mein in 1947, she gained prominence when, at the age of 20, she regaled audiences with Aayega Aanewala in the film Mahal two years later.

“Then there was Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya from Mughal-e-Azam. Audiences would throw coins on the screen when that song came on,” she said.

To date, in a career spanning 75 years, she has recorded more than 30,000 songs in 35 Indian and foreign languages — including Malaysian, English and Nepalese — and earned a Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in the process.

But remind her about her achievements, and she shrugs it off with habitual modesty.

“There have been many talented singers before and after me (such as) Noor Jehanji, Shamshad Begumji, Geeta Duttji before me, and my sister Asha who were all extremely talented. Among the contemporary voices, I like Alka Yagnik, Shreya Ghosal and Sunidhi Chauhan,” she said.

Nearly 60 biographies have been written about the legendary singer, but she has not authored any herself. The platform where she does unleash her creative writing skills is Twitter.

With more than 14.6 million followers since her social media debut in 2010, the nonagenarian says she turns to Twitter to “stay in touch with friends” and has rarely forgotten to commemorate a colleague’s death or birth anniversary with a tweet on occasion.

“It’s the least we can do. We owe it to the entertainment industry. Earlier, we could pick up the phone and talk to one another. The only option I have is to meet them on social media,” she said.

And while there are no “fixed hours” for her time spent on the social media platform, she tweets when she has “something to say.”

“Otherwise, I stay away. Social media is addictive, and I advise more personal contact than virtual,” she added.

While the coronavirus outbreak and ensuing lockdown across India since March this year meant restriction on movement, Mangeshkar said that it did not derail her offline schedule.

After a “severe” lung infection last year, and based on doctor’s orders, she now leads a quiet, secluded life at her home in South Mumbai.

“The doctors have severely curtailed all my activities, including movie-watching,” she said, adding that she enjoys listening to music, as long as they are not her songs.

“I don’t listen to my songs. If I did, I’d find a hundred mistakes in my singing. Even in the past, once I finished recording a song, I was done with it,” she said.

This, however, was not the case for several Indian actresses, from Madhubala in the 1950s to Sridevi in the 1980s, who insisted on Mangeshkar singing for their onscreen personas.

The supreme songstress has sung for five generations of Bollywood heroines, but ask her which actress did most justice to her voice on-screen and she replies after a pause: “That’s a tough one because each heroine brought something special to my songs. But I’d have to go with Nutan. She was a singer herself, and when she emoted my songs, she sang along. The way she performed on Mann Mohana Bade Jhothe (Seema) is exemplary. Jaya Bachchan is also one of my favorites. I think the way she emoted to Bahon Mein Chale Aao (Anamika) added a lot to the song’s enduring popularity.”

And her career-defining song?

“It would have to be Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon (a patriotic song). No matter where I go, people ask about it, and some even ask me to sing it for them,” she said, before considering the question of her “lasting legacy” to the world.

“I honestly don’t know, but if I’ve received so much love for so long, I must’ve done something right.”

Borrowing a few lines from one of her popular songs, she seals off her birthday advice with a message for her fans: “Light one lamp to another and let the love flow. We are going through the worst possible phase in the history of civilization due to the coronavirus. Be kind and generous to those who are less privileged than you. Now is the time to stop being tight-fisted.”

Arabs in Paris showroom to highlight Mideast talent at fashion week

Author:
Sun, 2020-09-27 14:43

DUBAI: Paris Fashion Week is set to look a lot different this season. Kicking off on Sept. 28, only a handful of designers are staging physical shows while the rest are opting for digital presentations. Meanwhile, some designers, including Arab couturier Zuhair Murad, are opting out of showing collections this season entirely.
