What We Are Eating Today: Santa Nata

Fri, 2020-05-01 03:59

Famous for its Portuguese custard tarts, London-based Santa Nata (@santanata.sa) is offering the people of Riyadh a taste of pastel de nata, Portugal’s favorite treat.

Bakers at Santa Nata use top-quality ingredients to create perfectly crisp pastry shells filled with creamy egg-custard and topped with sprinkles of cinnamon or icing sugar.

Santa Nata is named after the home of the original pastel de nata in the parish of Santa Maria de Belem in Lisbon.

The original treat was created more than 200 years ago by monks at the Jeronimos monastery. At the time, large quantities of egg whites were used for starching clothes, allowing leftover yolk to be used in cake, pastry and dessert recipes.

In 1834, after Lisbon’s convents and monasteries were forced to close, monks began selling the sweet pastries at a nearby sugar refinery to boost revenues.

Santa Nata puffed pastries are cooked daily and can be ordered in packs of four or 12.

Santa Nata SA is located at Anas bin Malik Street, Al-Malqa, Riyadh, and is available on delivery apps such as The Chefz.
