DUBAI: A low-budget film depicting a young mother’s harrowing experience in the Syrian war has been nominated for a Peabody Award for Best Documentary, organizers announced Wednesday.

“For Sama” focuses on Waad Al-Khateab, a filmmaker living in Aleppo, as she goes about her life from the start of the uprising through to the brutal siege of the city by Bashar Al-Assad’s forces and their allies.

“So happy to see @forsamafilm nominated in #PeabodyAwards. Congratulations to all the filmmakers, friends and colleagues. We miss you all,” the filmmaker wrote to her 22,000 twitter followers.

In January, the award-winning film became the most nominated documentary in the history of the British Academy Film Awards. The film has been nominated for Outstanding British Film, Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Documentary.

The film has also been shortlisted for the Best Documentary Feature Award at the Oscars in December 2019.

The documentary, directed by Al-Khateab herself and Edward Watts, follows the young woman through marriage, childbirth and the agonizing decision whether to flee Aleppo for her family’s safety.
