Tayar
‘El Ghareeb’
This Jordanian duo (Bader Helalat and Ahmad Farah) only formed last year, but the pair have been performing together for many years, and it shows in this confident first single. Farah said they started out with the intention of creating “indie-folk music.” While that’s not how this turned out, it’s certainly an anthemic and atmospheric track.
KMulti & Adamillion
‘We Taking Over’
UAE-based rapper KMulti (Khalifa Al-Remeithi) releases his first single for Universal Music MENA, a collaboration with another Emirati artist, Adamillion. The upbeat track is, according to Al-Remeithi, “about how hip-hop in the Arab region is spreading and getting bigger.” While he recognizes that “exposure is a challenge in our part of the world,” he said in a press release that he is “confident in my fellow Arab artists and myself.”
Noush Like Sploosh
‘Wear Me Out’
There’s been a bunch of ‘lockdown’ videos released over the last month by regional artists. Dubai-based Noush Like Sploosh (Noush Anand) teamed up with Niki Mukki and Alex Valls for this ‘lo-fi’ video of a track she wrote a few years ago about “wanting to leave: a lover, a city, and not being able to — about how intimacy is complex and contradictory.”
Hawa Dafi
‘Esetna Livingroom Session’
And from the Occupied Golan Heights comes this funky, upbeat recording by Arabic ‘Gypsy rock’ group Hawa Dafi. The video comes complete with English subtitles, and a post that sums up why so many artists are making music at this difficult time. “If we can take a small part of relieving someone’s stress, even if it is just one person, it’s a good enough reason to share our music.”
