DUBAI: A trained graphic designer, Reema Al-Banna has always loved fashion. Her womenswear label Reemami is known for its bold and beautiful designs.
Based in the UAE, Al-Banna loves to play with cuts and color. She plans her spring collections with Ramadan in mind, so while she does not have a separate capsule for the holy month, her present collections have many pieces that will work for Ramadan.
“I’ll be dressing according to the occasion, the weather and my mood, but it will mostly be pieces from my ‘Wakesurf’ collection,” she told Arab News.
Since Al-Banna is an outdoors enthusiast, sports-related activities are a recurring inspiration for the label.
Her current collection “Wakesurf” is full of quirky prints and includes kaftans, dresses and jackets.
“I’m always on the hunt for the next sport that’s both challenging and gives you that adrenaline rush. Wake-surfing combined these, and it’s my inspiration for this season,” she said of the 40-piece collection.
“Each piece boasts an array of prints with my own version of traditional checks and repeated squares. It’s easy to mix and match.” Featuring light and fluid fabrics, the collection is primed for the holy month.
Al-Banna believes it is important for women to maintain their own personal style while being respectful of Ramadan. Her label is for the woman who likes comfortable clothes with an edge.
A graduate of French fashion school ESMOD, she started her label in 2010 and has since seen her pieces worn by Jordan’s Queen Rania, model Bella Hadid and singer Kelly Rowland, to name a few.
An award-winning designer, Al-Banna’s architectural approach to design means her pieces have a feel of innovation.
She is committed to becoming 100 percent sustainable, and often uses repurposed materials in her collections.
“Repurpose, reuse, recycle. That’s our mantra. For example, we regenerate some of our samples to make new samples,” she said.
One of the few regional designers to also look at swimwear, she enjoys pushing the envelope. Retailing in stores such as Abu Dhabi’s Tryano, she believes: “Shopping from a small brand means a lot more to the designer, and you’ll get a super unique piece loved and nurtured by a creative soul.”
