‘Help’
Esther Eden
The young singer-songwriter’s latest release is accompanied by a beautiful video (produced by Soultrotter). The song itself, Eden told the BIMM Institute (where she studies) is about the games people play in relationships “or before they even get into one.” “Instead of just being honest, for fear of scaring the other person away, some people tend to wait,” she said.
‘Bein Mreytein’
Kinematik
This typically atmospheric single from the Lebanese post-rock instrumentalist outfit is taken from their new album, “Murur Al-Kiram,” which dropped at the end of February. “Bein Mreytein” offers a snapshot of what to expect: Subtle and smart layering of electronic sounds, guitars and percussion that gradually builds throughout the track.
‘Jalila’
Youmna Saba
You’ll need some commitment for this track, which clocks in at a little under 45 minutes — but it’s worth it for a remarkable performance of solo oud and vocals filmed live at Beirut’s Metro Al-Medina. Saba created this piece as a tribute to the sixth-century poet Jalila Bint Morra.
‘El Deeb’
Zeyada
Billed by her label as “a fresh new Arabic sound which lies between alternative indie and pop,” the Egyptian singer-songwriter and visual artist’s latest release is about “the obsession of self-monitoring.” “We no longer need an external source of surveillance, (we have become) our own systems of oppression,” says Zeyada.
