The Alexandrian artist’s latest solo exhibition is a mixed-media affair that — like his previous work — is inspired by the streets of his hometown. “Some ideas stem from fantasy, others from reality, with borrowed elements from myths and legends or even history,” says the gallery’s bio of the artist.
‘Sinai (Wednesday)’
Abou Kila’s work is strikingly primitive at times, with a restless energy that echoes the hustle and bustle of his city. This sculpture — glass covered with cotton, clothes and accessories — typifies his willingness to experiment with different ways to express himself.
‘Frameless’
“Strands of political, social, economic, scientific and historical elements are clearly sewn through his artworks as he portrays personal or societal perspectives,” the gallery writes. “He believes that when it comes to honest art, ideas may be repeated but embodied and expressed in a unique fashion.”
