MANAMA: Vandalye, a young UAE-based trio consisting of vocalist Scott Attew and twins Lucas and Thomas McCone, built considerable buzz in a short time after forming in late 2015 and releasing a five-track EP “From The Beginning” shortly afterwards. They’ve been quiet for a while now. But that’s about to change.

The alt-folk band spent most of 2017 in Hamburg, Germany, writing and recording material for their debut album. And this week saw the release of their first official single (and title track from the upcoming album) “Cigarettes and Minarets.”

The title and lyrics are a nod to the band’s origins, Lucas told Arab News. “We were all raised in Dubai and we could always see a minaret from our houses.” The video, shot by Andrew D’Mello and due to drop around the same time, will also have a local flavour.

“We wanted a video to show where we began our music careers,” said Lucas, adding that the three of them plan to move away from the Middle East soon to pursue further musical opportunities.

The track is unabashedly commercial, with Attew’s soaring vocals leading an anthemic chorus.

“I’d say, musically, it has a bit of a Goo Goo Dolls vibe with the layered guitars, and it’s arranged for a big chorus,” Lucas said.

In other regional music news, Bahraini-Palestinian singer-songwriter Banah has released her first single on Universal Music MENA, with whom she signed a deal in June. Banah made a name for herself through her YouTube “fusion” covers of Arab and English classics by artists including Aretha Franklin and Fayrouz. Her new single “Shou Bina,” is an original, based on a poem by Pierre Hayek, composed by Yehya Al-Hassan, and arranged by producer Omar Sabbagh.

In a press release, the label explained that the song is “about couples who have been together for a long period of time and have perhaps lost the spark in their relationship.”

The upbeat track comes with a video inspired by Cirque du Soleil, featuring a large cast showing off some enviable acrobatic skills.

Apart from being Banah’s label debut, “Shou Bina” is also, apparently, the artist’s first release after a “rebranding phase” to create “an honest and more authentic look and feel.”
