CANNES: Saudi Arabia’s cultural board has opened a wing at the prestigious Cannes Film festival in southern France to celebrate the Kingdom’s talents.

The participation at Cannes, the first time for an official Saudi Arabian body, is a direct result of the Kingdom’s strategy to develop local Saudi content production.

The board aims to show nine films at Cannes made by Saudi Arabian women and men, in the hope to open further contacts between Saudi film makers and international film producers visiting the festival.

The Saudi Film Council organized the Cannes screenings to promote the industry in the Kingdom, which has recently reinstated cinema in the country after three decades.

The Saudi presence will give international industry specialists a chance to meet and exchange with Saudi film professionals.

The film screening will offer also a rare chance for movie-makers from across the globe to network with the Kingdom’s professionals and scout locations for future film-making.

The Cultural board’s participation in Cannes is a first official Saudi Arabian representation at the decades-old festival.

Last April, the Saudi Arabian Minister of Information and Culture announced Saudi film-makers’ official participation in this year’s Cannes for the first time as part of “Vision 2030” that also calls for building and cementing knowledge in the movie-making field.

The cultural board has launched several initiatives over the past month, among them the establishment of the the Saudi Film Board.
