LONDON: Welsh IT worker James Howells claims that he accidentally threw away a hard-drive filled with $100 million worth of Bitcoin in a landfill four years ago, and in an attempt to retrieve it, Howells is offering the local council a 10 percent cut if they find it.
However according to Wales Online, Howells’ requests have been denied by the Newport City Council repeatedly, despite the amount offered to them.
"They are not interested in helping at all because the people in charge have never given me the chance to explain the details and the exact situation to them,” Howells told Wales Online.
"Here I am offering them a 10 per cent cut for doing zero work at zero risk to them ...It just doesn't make sense,” he added.
The 32-year-old says that the laptop’s location within the landfill can be estimated based on the date it was thrown away.
A spokesman for the local council told the Welsh daily that they have been contacted about the retrieval of the laptop containing the Bitcoin, but that the financial and environmental costs were too high – especially with no guarantee of retrieving the hardware.
Bitcoin, a digital cryptocurrency, has been increasing in value over the years – reaching a 11,000 percent increase over the past year alone and steadily climbing.
