JEDDAH: The 39th edition of the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), which kicked off on Tuesday night will close on Nov. 30 in the presence of international stars Nicolas Cage, Hilary Swank and Adrian Brody, according to news portal Bitajarod.
Two of the more prominent attendees at the opening ceremony were British actress Elizabeth Hurley and US actress Eva Longoria. The ceremony’s host, Asser Yassin, presented Hurley with an honorary award.
Hurley expressed joy to be at the festival for her first time. “I am so excited,” she said, adding that she had visited Egypt several times in the past, including a trip to Luxor last year.
On Wednesday, she tweeted a photo of herself on the red carpet: “Thank you Cairo Film Festival for having me.”
The Kate Winslet-Idris Elba feature “The Mountain Between Us” was the opening film of the night. The film is directed by Dutch/Palestinian director Hany Abu Assad, whose 2005 film “Paradise Now” was nominated for an Oscar.
There are 15 films in contention for the main competition and the prestigious Golden Pyramid award.
Hussein Fahmy, veteran Egyptian actor and former head of the CIFF, is the jury committee head of the international competition for feature and documentary films.
As Australia is the guest of honor at this year’s edition, a host of acclaimed Australian films — from George Miller’s “Mad Max” and Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge,” to Garth Davis’s “Lion” and Jeffrey Walker’s “Ali’s Wedding” — will be screened.
