The hidden, floating sanctuary built by artists

When I need to escape for a few days, the first place that comes to mind is a tiny outpost called Freedom Cove.

Freedom Cove is a hidden treasure tucked away off the west coast of Vancouver Island. After a six-hour drive hugging mountainsides and winding through temperate rainforests along the way, I meet Alistair Horne at his docks on a wet, gray morning. Alistair drives for Tofino Water Taxi. He is a good friend of Wayne and Catherine King, whose floating home is only accessible by boat.


It’s early — a heavy fog blankets Clayoquot Sound. Our boat cuts through the glassy, still water.
